To get our students to read more, we are thinking outside the box. One change this year, after talking with a group of teens, is to not have a due date on checked-out materials, as long as materials are returned in the same or nearly the same condition by the end of the year and returned if there is a request for a checked-out material. In addition, we would like to add some magazines and newspapers.

Floyd County Public Health is hosting an Immunization Clinic at the Middle School on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 3:00 to 5:30 PM, providing required school vaccines to all students in need. Parents are encouraged to attend to review vaccine information, sign consent forms, and provide insurance information (if applicable). The vaccines will be provided to all students at no cost, regardless of insurance status. If parents are unable to attend, but would like to have their student vaccinated at the clinic, please contact the school Health Office directly.
Documentation of a valid Certificate of Immunization Exemption (Religious or Medical) may be submitted in place of a Certificate of Immunization.
Iowa requires all students in 9th grade to have a dental screening on file with the school.
If you have not yet submitted your student’s Certificate of Dental Screening, please send the completed form to the school health office. If your student has had a recent dental visit, your dental provider may be able to complete the required form for you.

On Thursday, October 1st, ninth-graders will be participating in the Youth Frontiers Respect Retreat. Youth Frontiers (YF) is a nonprofit organization that has been delivering retreats to schools since 1987. They provide schools with experiences that inspire character, civility, and community so that our next generation of leaders is grounded in character. On the Respect Retreat, the YF Programs Staff will focus on creating a more positive school community by engaging students in a variety of activities that enhance self-confidence, empathy, and connectedness.
Freshmen and their Parents/Guardians will be receiving an email with more information. The information will include an opt-out section if you do not want your student to participate in this experience. If choosing to opt out, please sign and return the Freshmen Respect Retreat Letter & Passive Consent form to the high school front office by Monday, Sept. 21st. If you plan to bring a non-Charles City student to the homecoming dance on Saturday, September 26, you must pick up the form from the high school office and fill out the information about the person you are bringing. This form will need to be returned to the high school office before 3 pm on Wednesday, September 23, and the office will verify with your guest's school that they are eligible to attend the dance with you. No outside guests will be allowed to attend the dance unless this form is filled out and verified by the office.
Juniors -If you are interested in taking the PSAT exam, please sign up with Ms. Brandau. You MUST have a parent/guardian sign the fee consent form (in the email that was sent to the student's school email) and turn it in to me to officially sign up. The due date to sign up is Wednesday, Sept. 23rd! Over 70 institutions will be at this event and it is a great opportunity to learn more about a variety of colleges from the Midwest!

Public health authorities have recently reported a confirmed case of measles within our broader region. While there are no confirmed cases in our school at this time, keeping our community safe and informed is our top priority. Please review the following information regarding symptoms, prevention, and immediate steps to take if your family is impacted.
Recognizing the Symptoms
Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can remain in the air for up to two hours. Symptoms generally appear 7 to 14 days after exposure and typically include: Initial signs: High fever, persistent cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis). Mouth spots: Tiny white spots (Koplik spots) may appear inside the mouth 2 to 3 days after symptoms start. Characteristic rash: A red, blotchy rash usually breaks out 3 to 5 days after initial symptoms. It typically begins on the face at the hairline and spreads downward over the neck, trunk, arms, and legs.
Prevention & Vaccination
MMR Vaccination: The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine is the most effective defense. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are approximately 97% effective at preventing measles. All children entering kindergarten are required to have two doses of the vaccine or must have a religious or medical exemption on file. Verify Records: Please check your child’s vaccination records to ensure they are fully up to date. If you are unsure of your family’s immunization status, contact your primary care provider or local health department. Get Vaccinated: Call Floyd County Public Health at 641-257-6111 to get vaccinated if you are unsure of your families vaccine status. The vaccine is FREE.**
**What to Do If You Are Exposed or Sick Isolate at Home:
If your child exhibits symptoms or has had known exposure to someone with measles, keep them home from school, sports, and all other social gatherings. Call Before Visiting a Clinic: Contact your healthcare provider, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving in person. Calling ahead allows staff to guide you on safe entry to avoid exposing others in waiting areas. Immediately Notify the School: Inform our school nurse's office immediately if your child is diagnosed with measles or identified as a close contact of a confirmed measles case. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school environment healthy and safe for all students. Please reach out to Floyd County Public Health at 641-257-6111 if you have any questions or need support accessing local health resources.

Mike Molstead Motors has generously provided each Charles City student in grades Kindergarten-12th grade with a 2026-27 season activity pass to attend all regular season home games. All students will receive their pass on the first day of school. They must show their pass at the gate for admission. If you lose your pass, you can get a new one for a $2 fee at the main office of the building or school you attend.
It's Your Senior Year Class of 2027!! And that means the yearbook needs your senior photos. Senior photos can be submitted through the following link: https://photos.jostens.com/ZTDYGHThe senior who submits their photo first will receive a beverage of their choice from Mrs. Downing and the yearbook!!
Students may not bring their personal computers to school to use. This policy is clearly stated in our 1:1 student handbook (bottom of page 10) as well as being included in a school board policy (605.6 Regulation). Students who use their personal computers at school will receive a Telecommunications Violation.

If you haven't already done so, please register your child using the PowerSchool website at charlescityschools.powerschool.com to do so. Please call the high school office at 641-257-6510 if you need assistance
First Day of School - Monday, August 24 - Freshmen should arrive before 8:00am and report to the cafeteria. HyVee is providing breakfast and then Freshman Orientation will be held in the high school gymnasium.
Upperclassmen should arrive by 9:45am and report to the high school gym by 10:00 for an all-school assembly.
All students will receive their new Chromebooks in their homeroom/advisory time on the first day of school. If students did not turn in their Chromebooks before leaving for the summer, they will need to return their old one before receiving their new one.

TECHNOLOGY REMINDER
Students may not bring their personal computers to school to use. This policy is clearly stated in our 1:1 student handbook (bottom of page 10) as well as being included in a school board policy (605.6 Regulation). Students who use their personal computers at school will receive a Telecommunications Violation.

If you haven't already done so, please register your child using the PowerSchool website at charlescityschools.powerschool.com to do so. Please call the high school office at 641-257-6510 if you need assistance
First Day of School - Monday, August 24 - Freshmen should arrive before 8:00am and report to the cafeteria. HyVee is providing breakfast and then Freshman Orientation will be held in the high school gymnasium.
Upperclassmen should arrive by 9:45am and report to the high school gym by 10:00 for an all-school assembly.
All students will receive their new Chromebooks in their homeroom/advisory time on the first day of school. If students did not turn in their Chromebooks before leaving for the summer, they will need to return their old one before receiving their new one.
First Day Lunch and Class Schedule
10:50 - 11:20 - 10th and 11th grade eat lunch
9th and 12th grade report to Homeroom/Advisory
11:25 - 11:55 - 10th and 11th grade go to Homeroom/Advisory
9th and 12th grade eat lunch - there is NO OPEN CAMPUS for Seniors until Monday, August 31
1st period 12:00 - 12:20
2nd period 12:25 - 12:45
3rd period 12:50 - 1:10
4th period 1:15 - 1:35
5th period 1:40 - 2:00
6th period 2:05 - 2:20
7th period 2:25 - 2:40
8th period 2:45 - 3:00
Student Schedules
Students should now be able to view their schedules on PowerSchool for the Fall term. If they need to make a change in their schedule, they will need to follow the procedure outlined below:

SUN Bucks (Summer EBT) Program
The SUN Bucks program (also known as Summer EBT) provides families with $120 per child in grocery benefits over the summer to help ensure children have access to nutritious food while school is out. Eligible children/families include those who already have SNAP or FIP benefits, are approved for free/reduced school meals, have Medicaid at or below 185% of the poverty level, or are in foster care.
